You make the call

Regardless of the problem, consider the facts of the situation and whether or not your role as LHO is appropriate.  You cannot be all things to all people. You try your hardest, and if the complaint can’t be readily resolved, the municipality’s only remedy is to take the matter to court. If the municipality doesn’t want to make the investment, it is simply up to the one who raised the complaint to go to court. The municipality is only required to solve some problems - some, but not most.

Maine statutes contain laws that do not provide a direct remedy but instead provide a legal definition or provide guidance so solving the problem becomes easier.

This module will discuss three examples of the kinds of “gray area” complaints you are likely to receive and how to go about resolving them.
