Introduction to Course - Text of Mark Griswold Video

Hello. My name is Mark Griswold and I am the director of the Office of Local Public Health. This office was created in 2008, following the creation of public health districts across the state and other important changes in public health infrastructure. Our job is to coordinate public health activities on a local and regional basis. An important part of our work is to provide support and supervision to Local Health Officers across the state. One of the first steps we’ve taken is to design this online training curriculum, first to satisfy a statutory training requirement, but also to make sure that you have the tools you need to do your job.

This training is designed with the understanding that each Local Health Officer faces a unique set of challenges and opportunities. We know that Maine’s Local Health Officers are a diverse audience in more ways than the size of your towns.  For some of you, much of this may be a review and a restructuring of what you already know.  For others, it will be new material.

The purpose of this self-paced, online course is to help you learn to apply the basic knowledge to be a successful Local Health Officer. Local Health Officers share a lot of common ground, and one of our goals is to remind you that you are not alone. There is helpful material on the Maine Centers for Disease Control Website; links to important and relevant programs are provided throughout this training. The Office of Local Public Health along with the District Public Health Liaisons also stand ready to answer your questions and help you find the resources that you need.
This course is designed for independent learning.  This learning experience will be reinforced by additional periodic training opportunities and by meetings with your District Public Health Liaison.

On behalf of Maine CDC and the Office of Local Public Health, Dr. Mills and I would like to thank you for accepting the responsibilities of your appointment and for serving the State of Maine as a local health officer.
