Exceptions

The Department’s General Rule says that:

“The Department or its contracted representatives may not acknowledge or disclose any confidential information to anyone, without authorization.”

However, most laws also identify exceptions or circumstances when an authorization is not required. The purpose of this section is to make you aware of the role  exceptions play and when it is okay to use them. Specifically, in this section you will learn to:

  1. Identify the common elements of an exception
  2. Determine what different exceptions apply to your confidential information
  3. Identify who can use an exception
  4. Determine how and when you limit the information you share to the “minimum necessary”
